Who Are Digital Nomads? Think Again!

When you mention digital nomads, visions of beautiful young people in cool camper vans on Instagram spring to mind. However, thanks to the normalisation of remote work and hybrid work, many of us can work from home these days, regardless of age or beauty!
The “shift to remote work has resulted in a large increase in the number of digital nomads: people who choose to live a location independent, technology enabled lifestyle that allows them to work and travel remotely, anywhere on the internet-connected world”. (Source: MBO Partners, 2021 Digital Nomad Research Brief).
Working from home – or #wfm as it is increasingly referred to – doesn’t necessarily mean working from your home, you can work from anyone else’s home, or a second home if you have one.
Definitions Of Digital Nomads
Here are some segments of digital nomads that we are seeing here in Swapoffi:
The Experienced Home Exchanger
These people belong to more than one home exchange community so know how it works and how to maximise it (hint: be open to locations and homes). They have ‘home manuals’ already prepared for incoming guests and are open and keep to exploring new destinations. They don’t need hand holding with regard to home exchanges as first timers understandably do. They are ready to confirm a swap as soon as location, dates and duration matches are made.
Part-time Digital Nomads
Usually homeowners, part-time digital nomads love travelling but also relish returning to their homes. They are not looking for a permanent life on the road, but love to travel for a few months at a time, and love to return home. You could say these guys get the best of both worlds, live like a digital nomad yet still retain a sense of ‘home’ whether that feeling is from having your own bricks-and-mortar or having a familiar base to return to anytime travelling gets too much.
Full-time Digital Nomads
These guys do not own or rent homes at a base location. They are true DNs, who live out of a suitcase and move from location-to-location full time. Proud people, they wear their full time DN badge with honour. Full time digital nomads drive meetups, co-working spaces, co-working homes, short term rentals, demand for portals with information on tax and visas and socialising and all the other stuff visitors to a new location require. We salute you!
“Change of Scenery” Remote Workers
Not unsurprisingly, remote workers sometimes complain about being tired of looking at the same four walls. They still need to work but want a change of scenery from time-to-time. A home exchange such as Swapoffi, where every home comes with a workspace or home office, is ideal for full time remote workers.
“3 months on 3 Months off”
One of the consequences of Brexit here in Europe is that many English people with second homes in Europe are restricted to only spending 90 in every 180 days at their second home. This has spawned a new type of traveller, one who spends 3 months in the UK, and the next 3 months in Europe. Some of these people own a home in one place, or both.
“Minimum One Month”
Our members are not weekend hoppers, they tend to want to stay in one place for a minimum of one month. This is a very successful formula for a home exchange, especially one like Swapoffi where you get a workspace too. Living like a local for one month or more gives you a different travel experience than shorter stays in hotels.
