Work from home? Why not work from anywhere?

Once upon a time, the ability to work from home (wfh) was regarded as the greatest work perk possible. Working from anywhere is the latest game changer in this new post-covid world. For all of us digital nomads and remote workers, it’s much more than how we work though, it’s also about how we live.
Unsurprisingly 99% of us don’t want to work in the office full time anymore. For those who can do hybrid work or work fulltime from home, your desire to do so probably depends on your home office set up, who else is at home during working hours, and how big or nice your home is.
Now you can work from some-one else’s home, thanks to our home exchange community where digital nomads and remote workers swap homes with workspaces and Wi-Fi with each other. (Plug – it’s all free, no commitment and no catch. If you are not already signed up, take 10 minutes to join and be verified, so you can enjoy free accommodation every time you travel!)
What Is Driving the Ability To Work From Anywhere?
Wi-Fi Availability and Robustness
- After the cost of accommodation, availability of reliable and robust Wi-Fi is the second biggest problem faced by remote workers. If you can’t get Wi-Fi, you can’t get online, if you can’t get online, you can’t work.
Thankfully Wi-Fi is becoming more widespread across the globe, but it is not something you can take for granted, no matter where in the world you go.
The increasing roll out of Wi-Fi is the main reason we can all work from anywhere (wfa), and not just work from home where you know your Wi-Fi is reliable. Increasing Numbers of Knowledge Workers
- In years gone by, workers went to where work was concentrated, usually in factories and offices. Thanks to knowledge work such as marketing, software, ecommerce, IT and similar, work now flows to people instead of people flowing to work. You can work from anywhere. Work doesn’t care where you are. Read more by McKinsey on The Future of Work.
The Rise of Digital Nomadism
- Catalysts behind digital nomadism such as low fare airlines and the 58 (and growing) countries who actively compete for these high paid knowledge workers, mean that digital nomad numbers are on the rise. Armed with digital nomad visas to live and work legitimately, the allure that many countries offer – mainly warm weather and lower costs of living - are enticing for many nomads.
Increase in Remote Job Listings
- Since Covid, there has been a three-fold increase in the number of remote job listings. The ability to work remotely isn’t so much of a perk now, as an employee expectation.
Whilst flexible work and hybrid work allow for several days a week working from home, the trend for fully remote jobs continues to grow.
If you are your own boss, work from wherever you want! Proven Productivity
- With working from home being a norm for several years now, there is an abundance of data showing that productivity doesn’t just happen in the office. People are proven to be just as productive working from home. There is a thought now that people will work at home for productivity and go into the office for socialising and team building.
Increase in Co-Working and Co-Living Spaces
- If you prefer working in a co-working environment rather than a home office, these can be easily found in most digital nomad destinations as well as cities and towns. Those new to the digital nomad life often find co-working spaces good to meet people.
There is a fee to work from co-working spaces, but many offer a day rate, as well as weekly and monthly packages.
So, if you can work from anywhere, why wouldn’t you?
