The rise in the number of co-working spaces around the world is heartening for digital nomads, corporate nomads, and remote workers like us. We fully support anything that facilitates productive work when you are in the fortunate position of being able to work from anywhere.
What is a Co-Working Space?
A co-working space is an office space where remote workers and entrepreneurs pay to hire use of the facilities on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. As the name suggests, the venue and facilities are all about work, however most co-working spaces also offer mingling and meeting spaces so their tenants can get to know each other, socially and professionally.
Tenants of co-working spaces can end up using the services of the other professionals in the co-working space, forging professional links, or simply enjoy sharing a coffee or a few beers in the co-working space.
For some, a co-working space is simply a means to get out of the house, and to develop and maintain a work routine. The working from home consequences of Covid meant that working from home was a first for many people. Some relished it and some struggled.
For many people who work solo, co-working spaces offer an environment where you can work with or amongst other people, without being in the rat race.
In summary, a co-working space mimics not just an office, but also a team environment. Long live co-working spaces!
2 Reasons Digital Nomads Won’t Pay For Co-working Spaces
We asked some of our home exchange community what their thoughts were on co-working spaces. Their feedback surprised us.
Read on to learn why many digital nomads and remote workers prefer working from a home office rather than a co-working space.
- Do you want to pay for a co-working space and pay for rent or accommodation?
- Many remote workers would prefer to pay extra rent to live in a nice place where they can also work from, rather than pay to use a co-working space in addition to paying for accommodation.
- Ask yourself what are your real reasons to use a co-working space?
- Experienced nomads told us that they didn’t need a co-working space to meet people. Those who have been on the road for a while have become quite resourceful at meeting people, and so don’t feel the need to pay to work in a venue where other people also work.
Co-working spaces have a place in the remote working community. We love that they exist. Their very existence confirms that the traditional commute to an office 5 days a week is over. A new way of working and living is here and here to stay.
However, co-working spaces are not for everyone. There is another option, however. The choice is not simply between working from home, the office, or a co-working space. What about working from some-one else’s home?Home exchanges have been around for decades, traditionally targeting the family annual vacation market. They all work in the same way. Simply pay a low-cost membership fee – minimum 3 months – and you can swap homes and home offices – with other members.
Everybody wins with home swaps as accommodation is free, memberships are verified, and all homes have a workspace as well as living and sleeping accommodation.
So, when you hit the road next, consider a home swap for accommodation and for working. Save money and time. Where will you go next?
